Crystal Red Shrimp

It was selectively bred from the bee shrimp  These great shrimp come in many different grades and styles.  Ranging from a Grade A all the way up to Grade SSS.  There are shrimp with mostly red bodies and thin white stripes (most common), shrimp with wider white stripes, and shrimp with very wide solid white stripes (most sought after). Some say they have originated from Japan.  They have been selectively breed for there color.  CRS are becoming quite popular in the aquarium hobby.

Tank Requirements

These dwarf shrimp require slightly soft to slightly acidic water conditions in order to thrive.  High Quality Water is key to keeping CRS thriving. High nitrates can affect the higher grade shrimp and possibly kill them. So, Water changes and water testing is key. Copper too is toxic to all Dwarf Shrimp.  Many medications contain elevated levels of copper, so it is recommended not to medicate an aquarium with Dwarf Shrimp in it A canister filter system is recommended for keeping Crystal Red Shrimp, as it provides the best mechanical and biological functions.

Breeding

Crystal Red Shrimp are fairly easy to breed if water conditions are good.

Crystal Red Shrimp carry their eggs a little longer than many other Dwarf Shrimp.  When the babies hatch they will be little miniatures of the mom.  The shrimp lets will develop a little more slowly than most dwarf shrimp.  It can be difficult to determine the sex of a Crystal Red Shrimp; the males are a slightly smaller and have shorter thinner tail sections.  The females are larger with a longer and wider tail section.

Feeding

Crystal Red shrimp are not particularly great algae consumers; they would prefer a rich vegetable diet. You can feed blanched (boiled until soft) organic spinach, Algae, Spirulina wafers/pellets, even flake food.   You can also find a large variety of flake/dry food made especially for the Crystal Red Shrimp. When searching out food for your CRS’S you want to make sure the food does not contain Copper. Copper is a heavy metal and even a small dose is enough to kill any freshwater shrimp.
